RIP Dave “From The Grave” Schoof (1966-2023)

So if you’re a regular KCSB listener, you might have heard the name “Dave From the Grave” over the years. Dave was a regular and dedicated listener who frequently called KCSB DJs, especially new DJs who were just on the air, to let them know he was listening. Any time of day was a possibility – Dave seemed to have the radio tuned 24/7 and would call regardless of the hour.

Sadly, Dave From The Grave – real name Dave Schoof – passed away suddenly early this year. For reasons yet known, this news has only recently made it to the larger KCSB community.

As a KCSB DJ, you could generally expect two kinds of callers – 1) no one, or 2) people wanting to discuss the methods used by the US Government to control the weather via terrestrial satellites (or topics of similar substance). Dave was a welcome change. Dave had the timing down – a quick call to toss a hello, a quick compliment and that was it. Short, to the point, and positive – and as a result KCSB programmers loved hearing from him.

To see just how much Dave meant to the station, here is a video tribute some programmers put together back in 2007.

Short documentary about a super dedicated college radio station, KCSB, fan known as “Dave from the Grave.”

There was also a three part write up in 2010 – THREE PARTS! – in Santa Barbara’s weekly, The Santa Barbara Independent, on Dave From The Grave and his KCSB fandom:

Listening Through the Graveyard, Part One
Listening Through the Graveyard, Part Two
Listening Through the Graveyard, Part Three

Dave proved that you don’t need to be on the speaking end of the microphone to be part of the KCSB community. The listener side is just as important. He will be missed.
