Welcome to The Return of CoolMojo: Online Edition

Hosted by Bryan D. Brown

Note: While the show is currently on a “hiatus TBD“, I am leaving this up for posterity.

So many, many moons ago, before I became a boring Long Island suburbanite, I lived in Santa Barbara, and I was also the Chief Engineer and a programmer at KCSB-FM. In June of 2020, when the COVID quarantine was in full effect, KCSB reached out to alumni programmers and a number of us virtually returned to produce programming from afar and to once again be a part of the KCSB and Santa Barbara community. Hence, The Return of CoolMojo was born. Life, man – it’s strange.

The show largely focuses on free, avante-guard, experimental, and “loft” jazz starting in the late 1960s to the present. You’ll hear the standard bearers of the free jazz movement – late John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, etc – but you’ll also hear modern artists like Moor Mother, Nicole Mitchell, Peter Brötzmann, Angel Bat Dawid, Jeff Parker and others – and all artists between.

Currently, the show airs on Saturdays at 4pm on KCSB-FM 91.9 in Santa Barbara. If you’re not a Santa Barbara local, you can listen online at kcsb.org and there’s an archive available for two weeks after the show airs.

And there’s also the “incomplete but slowly getting there” show archive at hearthis.at.
