RIP Jack DeJohnette (1942 – 2025)
I know I am a few days late with this but by now I am sure you’ve heard that legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette has passed away at the age of 83.
While he wasn’t a fixture of free jazz per se, he did make more than a few appearances on the show. It’s not so much a question of who he played with as much as who didn’t he play with… that discography is something else.
Anyway, I find myself going back to this performance from 1990 (embedding is disabled so a link will have to suffice) – it’s amazing I suggest spending some time with it.
And this performance with Jack DeJohnette performing along side Bill Laswell, Derek Bailey, and DJ Disk – I really don’t know how to describe this other to say that this was one of the videos that I came across back in 2010 that, after a long hiatus, reinvigorated my interest in listening to jazz on a regular basis:
Rest well, Jack – and thank you.
