RoCM Playlist: 22 Nov 2025

If you happen to be in the NYC area (and why wouldn’t you be if you’re listening to a jazz show in Santa Barbara, California), then I recommend checking out the Talea Fall of Freedom Open Stage event tonight in Brooklyn. It’s free and will feature talented performers from the New York metropolitan area.

So after last week’s re-air, we are back with a brand new show featuring a recently released volume four in the “Rivbea Live!” series. This release features a live performance by Oliver Lake, Fred Hopkins, Phillip Wilson, Baikida Carroll, and Michael Gregory Jackson at Studio Rivbea, one of the more prominent loft jazz spaces in NYC back in the 1970s run by Sam Rivers and his wife Beatrice. We also hear a track from the second release by Marc Levin, and round the first hour out with new music by Mary Halvorson and track by the Dave Holland Quartet.

The second hour features a great track by Marion Brown written by Jean Toomer, the latter of which is a poet and novelist more famously associated with the Harlem Renaissance. We follow that up with a Lester Bowie cover of the Buck Ram song The Great Pretender, made famous by The Platters in 1955. And we close out the second hour with a pair of duets, the first between Hal Russell and Mars Williams followed by Arthur Doyle and Sunny Murray.

Here is the playlist. Don’t forget that you can listen to the RoCM online at KCSB-FM’s website and there’s an online archive available for two weeks after the show airs.
