RoCM Peter Brötzmann Tribute: 1 July 2023

So the beginning of the Summer 2023 programming schedule means it is the 3rd anniversary of The Return of CoolMojo, as we started way back when in 2020. Was it a simpler time back then? No. But when we started, I don’t think I expected to still be on the air 3 years later. Kind of crazy.

The bad news is that we begin our 3rd year with a tribute to Peter Brötzmann – who passed away on June 22nd. Hard to sum up a career that spanned over 50 years in a 2 hour radio show, but for this show, we don’t just hear his music but also interview segments from Brötzmann that include his views on politics, art, music, philosophy, etc. For those who want to listen to the full interviews, here they are:

They are very much worth a your time.

And with that, here’s the playlist for this week. Don’t forget that you can listen online at KCSB-FM’s website and there’s an online archive available for two weeks after the show airs.

Happy 4th of July week, everyone. Lots of good music this week. We have new music from William Parker, Hamid Drake and Cooper-Moore, as well as newer music from Joy Guidry. And we round out with some classic tracks from Anthony Braxton and The Ensemble Al-Salaam. The Flor de Toloache track is a little outside…

The RoCM is officially on the KCSB-FM schedule for Fall 2023 at 4pm – same jazz time, same jazz channel – although the re-air at Wed at 12am is no longer happening. That was only temporary anyway – so it’s good that they are moving things around. Anyway, three birthdays to celebrate this week –…

So not a lot of ranting this week. I could write a bit more about the saga that is the Congressional district held by everyone’s favorite babysitter George Santos, but alas, it’s covered plenty elsewhere. Fun fact – former NY-3 congressional representative Tom Suozzi is attempting to win his old seat back with a primary…
